Thispaperdevelopsamulti-stagegeneral-equilibriummodelofglobalvaluechains(GVCs)andstudiesthespecializationofcountrieswithinGVCsinaworldwithbarrierstointernationaltrade.Withcostlytrade,theoptimallocationofproductionofagivenstageinaGVCisnotonlyafunctionofthemarginalcostatwhichthatstagecanbeproducedinagivencountry,butisalsoshapedbytheproximityofthatlocationtotheprecedentandthesubsequentdesiredlocationsofproduction.Weshowthat,otherthingsequal,itisoptimaltolocaterelativelydownstreamstagesofproductioninrelativelycentrallocations.Wealsodevelopandestimateatractable,quantifiableversionofourmodelthatillustrateshowchangesintradecostsaffecttheextenttowhichvariouscountriesparticipateindomestic,regional,orglobalvaluechains,andtracestherealin
